Sєx, drugs and Rock’n’Roll may be the first image that springs to mind when we think of musicians on tour.

But British popstar Dua Lipa proves you can’t always judge a book by its cover – quite literally.

The singer, 27, has revealed how she organised a book club with her crew during three years of touring from 2016.

Speaking at Hay Festival, she said: ‘Before when I was touring, I was travelling a lot. So, I just made a very conscious decision. Like if I wasn’t sleeping, I was reading. It helps you get through so many stories.

‘Especially on tour, I felt like I kind of already had a book club with the dancers and the pH๏τographer and everybody was sharing books with each other, between each other.

Role model: Speaking at Hay Festival, the New Rules singer said: 'If I wasn't sleeping, I was reading. It helps you get through so many stories'‘It was, again, that sense of community but we just had like extra things to talk about because there’s a real routine that happens on a tour… it’s the same every day. So having a different conversation or a different thing that happens through that is really fun to introduce.’

The singer has launched a monthly book club via her own platform, Service95, as well as a podcast, At Your Service, which sees her interviewing names including Edward Enninful, Sir Elton John and Amal Clooney.

Breaking stereotypes: London-born Ms Lipa has launched a monthly book club via her own newsletter, Service95Ms Lipa did not specify who, but was dating model Isaac Crew at the time.

She told audiences: ‘I think the book had just very interesting themes that helped me understand, you know books really help you to understand other people’s emotions or what they’re going through and different perspectives on the human experience.

‘And that’s what I found really quite fascinating and that was the part I was drawn to in the book.’

Published in 1984, the novel takes place in Prague during the late 1960s and early 1970s, depicting the 1968 Prague Spring revolution. It was later made into a film starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Juliette Binoche.

Ms Lipa’s appearance was a move from the traditional speakers invited to Hay, which this year also included grime artist Stormzy, who was there to discuss five years of his publishing company, Merky Books.
